REEDuce
Ecological noise barriers made of reed, thermally treated wood, and clay
Project Dates
Start: 2021
The Story
Noise pollution affects 1 in 5 Europeans and can lead to stress and illnesses such as cardiovascular diseases – especially in neighborhoods near roads, railways, airports, and industrial sites. Traditional noise barrier walls help reduce sound, but they contribute to environmental issues like climate change and often result in hazardous waste at the end of their lifespan. REEDuce presents a first-of-its-kind ecological noise barrier made from reed, thermowood, and clay. In addition to effective noise reduction, the REEDuce barrier:
- Made from renewable, ecological materials (e.g. reed)
- Functions as a carbon sink, helping mitigate climate change
- Circular design – no hazardous waste at the end of lifespan
- Can improve air quality by absorbing airborne particulate matter
- Serves as an insect habitat, boosting biodiversity
Success Factor | Hero Moment
Since 2023, Austria’s highways feature the first REEDuce pilot wall — proof that ecological noise protection works in practice. This pioneering installation is just the beginning, with larger projects now on the horizon to make sustainable infrastructure the new standard.
