Diaper Revolution
Cloth Instead of Plastic
Project Dates
Start: 2022
The Story
The waste crisis calls for innovative solutions, especially when it comes to everyday products. The annual volume of residual waste from disposable diapers in Europe amounts to a staggering 6.5 million tons. If all the residual waste in Austria were collected, it would take over 4 years to reach that amount. Disposable diapers can also not be upcycled, they will be incinerated. The new generation of cloth diaper systems combines environmental responsibility with maximum everyday comfort. Contrary to old misconceptions, they are characterized by intuitive, easy handling that integrates effortlessly into modern family life. The chemical superabsorbents found in disposable diapers are completely eliminated, greatly reducing the risk of diaper rash and skin irritation. Another advantage is the natural wetness feedback: Children sense moisture more clearly than in disposable diapers and have been shown to become potty-trained sooner. In addition to health and environmental benefits, the project also provides financial relief for families. Despite the initial purchase cost, cloth diapers are the significantly cheaper and more economical alternative over the entire diapering period.
Success Factor | Hero Moment
The founders of Lumina began exploring the topic of cloth diapers when their son was born. They quickly realized that they wanted to delve deeper into the subject and also encourage others to use more sustainable diapering solutions. Ultimately, they developed and launched their own brand because they experienced that some issues on the current market had not yet been adequately addressed.
