Kynd Hair

Europe’s first plant-based hair fiber

Project Dates

Start: 2022

The Story

In an industry largely reliant on fossil-based materials, Kynd Hair is pioneering a plant-based alternative to conventional plastic hair extensions. Traditional synthetic hair, often made from polyester or PVC, generates millions of kilograms of non-recyclable waste each year and can contain hazardous substances. Kynd Hair has developed an innovative fiber made from renewable biopolymers that replicates the appearance, feel, and performance of real hair—while being biodegradable, non-toxic, and ethically sourced. Designed for daily use and end-of-life sustainability, the product addresses both microplastic pollution and environmental health risks. By centering the needs of Black consumers—who are often overlooked in sustainable beauty—Kynd
Hair is proving that material innovation and climate justice can go hand in hand.

Success Factor | Hero Moment

After more than 150 lab trials and 1,5 years of research, the breakthrough came when Kynd Hair finally developed a prototype that was both biodegradable and functionally equivalent to synthetic hair. Achieving the right balance of strength, softness, and aesthetics marked a defining moment in the startups journey. Additionally, in 2024 Kynd Hair won the German Eco Design Award, the highest state award for ecological design – an incredible recognition.
