Climate change is such a significant problem that many people believe their everyday actions have no impact on the climate. However, this is not true. Many of our daily activities, such as what we eat, how we travel, and what we buy, contribute to CO2 emissions. Therefore, we can make a difference every day. It’s not about making sacrifices or engaging in the indulgence of compensation. Instead, it’s about making climate-friendly behavior enjoyable and rewarding which is what Klima-Taler (Climate Coins) is about.

The Klima-Taler addresses a problem in behavioral economics: knowledge about climate change does not change habits. However, if this knowledge brings direct benefits, it motivates long-term climate protection. Citizens can use an app and sustainable mobility to earn Klima-Taler, which they can exchange for discounts at swimming pools, museums, or local retailers. Klima-Taler expects more than 200 000 users by the end of 2024. Anonymized data analysis provides municipalities with valuable insights for citizen-centric urban planning.
