Vienna’s 100% Electric Postal Delivery

Saving 2300 tonnes of CO2 annually

Project Dates

Start: 2026

The Story

Vienna has become the largest European city to achieve fully CO₂-free last-mile postal delivery. This transformation was enabled by the complete electrification of the delivery fleet combined with alternative delivery methods such as e-bikes, e-mopeds and onfoot delivery. Around 1,000 electric vehicles now operate in the city, covering approximately eight million kilometres annually and significantly reducing emissions.

The project demonstrates how large-scale urban logistics systems can operate efficiently without fossil fuels. It combines infrastructure investments, including charging networks and renewable electricity supply, with operational changes that integrate different delivery modes.

By scaling electric mobility across all delivery types – from letters to parcels – the initiative establishes a replicable model for metropolitan areas worldwide. It highlights that climate-friendly transport solutions can be implemented at scale while maintaining reliable service for a growing urban population.

Success Factor | Hero Moment

The decisive success factor was the full-scale rollout of electric delivery across all postal services in Vienna, rather than a limited pilot. By simultaneously transforming vehicles, infrastructure and delivery modes, the project reached immediate city-wide impact. This demonstrated that CO₂-free urban logistics is achievable at scale without compromising operational efficiency.
