Climathon
Tackle Climate Change from the Ground Up
Project Dates
Start: 2015
The Story
Climathon events bring citizens together to raise awareness and inspire local climate action. A Climathon event is planned and coordinated by independent organisers and organisations. It can happen in-person, hybrid or virtually, and the event typically lasts 12-48 hours where participants collaborate to tackle local climate challenges.
Climathon has been organised since 2015 with about 600 organisers, 1,000 events and over 30,000 participants worldwide.
Success Factor | Hero Moment
Climathon empowers local citizens to take bold, collaborative action to tackle pressing climate challenges in their communities.
A standout story comes from Climathon Vienna, where two participants discovered the significant waste problem within the mattress industry. This insight led to the creation of MATR®, a circular economy company offering a mattress-as-a-service model for hotels—turning a linear waste stream into a sustainable service.
Another inspiring example comes from Climathon Pasig in the Philippines. Thanks to a strong partnership between the City of Pasig, the organisers Scale Solutions, and multiple Climathon-winning teams, the city now supports a dedicated Climathon Hub. This space enables ongoing collaboration, where teams further develop their ideas, learn from one another, and drive innovation that directly benefits the city and its citizens.
Climathon transforms ordinary people into climate heroes by harnessing their creativity, urgency, and collective power to deliver tangible, local impact.
