Richard Gere

Actor and Human Rights Activist

Richard Gere is not only a celebrated actor and producer – he is also recognized by his lifelong dedication to the defense of human rights and the protection of those who cannot protect themselves. Through his profound conviction and commitment with these causes, he has touched many lives around the world.
For more than forty years, he has walked hand by hand with those promoting causes that are devoted to human kindness, compassion and universal responsibility. At the center of his mission stands his enduring solidarity with the Tibetan people and their struggle to preserve their unique culture, identity, and way of life – a commitment he has carried openly and steadfastly since the 1980s.
Through The Gere Foundation, Richard Gere has channeled his advocacy for peace and non-violence, lending his voice and presence to the Tibetan cause, while also standing up for refugees, the homeless, the indigene peoples, and the preservation of our fragile planet, the place we all call home. His activism is never distant. Whether engaging with world leaders or sitting face to face with those in vulnerable situations, he strives to bring genuine presence, humility, and care.
Mr. Gere has received honors from amfAR, Amnesty International, the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric Aids Foundation, Hadassah International, the OneXOne Foundation, the Tibet Fund and the Harvard AIDS Institute. He is also the recipient of CARE’s Humanitarian Award for Global Change, the Eleanor Roosvelt Humanitarian Award, and the Marian Anderson Award.
