The Story

In 2017, the first hybrid biogas plant in the Philippines was launched. It expands an extensive recycling plant in Naga City, Cebu, which already had a sorting and composting plant as well as a fermentation plant. With the extension completed, the plant now provides recycling at the highest level!

The production of renewable energy by fermenting organic waste fractions used to be the first of its kind in the Philippines. The organic fraction used in the process consists of screened mixed solid waste and organic waste directly delivered from household, commercial and industrial entities. The biogas plant alone has a capacity of up to 130 tonnes of organic waste per day and produces 650 kWh/h of electricity for the region’s own needs.  From residual waste, alternative fuels are obtained for a local cement plant, while the composting plant provides the basis for sustainable agriculture.

The biogas plant is another important part of the flagship project in the Philippines. It not only creates awareness of the value of daily waste, but also relieves the burden on nature and offers numerous benefits for the local population.

Success Factor | Hero Moment

There was a hero moment when the plant started operating perfectly well – from the very beginning and up until today. After this first installation the operator of the plant received several requests to replicate this environment friendly waste system in other municipalities nearby, which on the long term is a real climate action story.
