The Story

Inspired by his daily work cleaning the streets of Lisbon, a Portuguese street sweeper transformed first-hand environmental challenges into an educational project with a simple mission: helping children become guardians of nature. Instead of relying on traditional awareness campaigns, he created Vicente, an ecological hero who teaches environmental responsibility through stories, humour, and adventure.

The project combines children’s literature, school activities, community engagement, and public events to encourage positive environmental habits. Through engaging characters and accessible storytelling, children learn about recycling, biodiversity, litter prevention, and respect for public spaces while discovering that small everyday actions can make a meaningful difference.

What makes the project unique is its authenticity. The stories are inspired by real situations witnessed on the streets, giving environmental education a practical and relatable perspective. Created by someone who experienced these challenges every day, the project bridges the gap between public services and the community, transforming real-life observations into inspiring educational content. The decisive moment for the success of the project was winning the “Junta-te ao Gervásio” environmental award, which recognized Vicente as an innovative educational initiative promoting environmental awareness. This recognition validated the project’s mission, increased its visibility, and demonstrated the power of transforming everyday experiences into a meaningful tool for protecting the planet.
